Google Patches 216 Android Vulnerabilities

The most severe issue, CVE-2026-58868, is a heap buffer overflow in FrameDecoder.cpp, part of Android’s media framework. Because the component processes video and image files to generate thumbnails and previews, a malicious file could trigger the flaw without user interaction.

The update also addresses CVE-2026-58876, a use-after-free vulnerability in the System component that could enable remote code execution without additional privileges. Critical kernel flaws fixed this month could allow remote privilege escalation.

Adam Boynton, Enterprise Strategy Manager at Jamf, said:

Android’s November Security Bulletin fixes 216 vulnerabilities across two patch levels. The most severe is CVE-2026-58868, a heap buffer overflow in the Framework’s FrameDecoder.cpp, part of the media stack that pulls frames from video and image files to generate thumbnails and previews. It can be exploited with no user interaction. Seven of the 23 critical-severity fixes sit in the System component, including CVE-2026-58876, a use-after-free flaw that can lead to remote code execution without additional privileges or user interaction. The bulletin also fixes critical kernel flaws that could allow remote privilege escalation. Google rates severity on what exploitation could do if Android’s built-in protections were bypassed.

None of these have been exploited in the wild, but now that the details are public, organisations should update their devices as a priority.

Google’s security bulletin separates the fixes into patch levels so device makers can address a common subset of issues more quickly. Enterprises should verify that managed devices receive the November patch level and investigate models that no longer receive vendor updates.
