Jumio Stress-Tests Identity Verification During World Cup Betting Surge

Identity verification provider Jumio says its technology processed tens of millions of transactions across global gaming customers during the tournament, including nine of Europe’s 10 largest gaming operators and several major U.S. sportsbooks.

The company’s data offers a glimpse into how major sporting events reshape digital identity traffic in real time. Brazil generated significant activity during the early stages of the tournament, followed by a noticeable shift after the team’s July 5 exit.

Jumio recorded its heaviest transaction periods on June 11, June 13, June 17, June 24 and June 30. Those dates included matches involving Brazil, Mexico, England, France, Portugal and other countries with large international fan bases.

Interestingly, the tournament final on July 19 ranked only as the seventh-busiest day for identity transactions. The third-place match on July 18 was the third-quietest day of the event, suggesting that betting account activity may be driven as much by regional participation and tournament momentum as by the prominence of a single match.

“Supporting our gaming customers through an event of this magnitude requires more than just raw capacity – it requires precision,” said Bala Kumar, Jumio president and CPTO. “By providing identity intelligence at scale, we enabled operators to handle peak match-day traffic without compromising on security or speed. This performance confirms that operators can protect their ecosystem and build player trust, even when global engagement is at its highest.”

Jumio said it worked with gaming operators before the tournament on capacity planning, traffic forecasting and readiness checks. Those preparations are increasingly important as sportsbooks balance regulatory know-your-customer requirements with pressure to approve legitimate players quickly.

TQJ, the company behind Brazilian betting platform Bet do Milhão, used Jumio to support verification and account security during the tournament.

“For our platform, the World Cup was a critical moment to maintain integrity and build lasting player trust during a time of high engagement,” said Fernando Justus Fischer, CEO at TQJ. “Jumio identity intelligence empowered us to streamline our verification processes and protect against unauthorized access, allowing our players to enjoy the matches in a secure environment.”

The tournament also provided a large-scale test for selfie.DONE, Jumio’s reusable identity system. Operators in Latin America processed hundreds of thousands of returning-player verifications through the technology, allowing users to confirm their identities without repeatedly submitting identity documents.

For gaming operators, the takeaway is clear: during global sporting events, identity infrastructure is no longer a background compliance function. It is part of the frontline defense against account fraud, unauthorized access and customer abandonment.
